China tightens restrictions and controls Internet use
China plans to enact tougher regulatory measures on Internet use with a pledge on Sunday to step up restrictions on the use of search engines and news websites in the latest step taken by President Xi Jinping to maintain strict control over the content by the Communist Party.
Xi made China's "electronic sovereignty" a priority in his expanded campaign to enhance security. He also reaffirmed the role of the ruling party in limiting and guiding online discussions. The party and the State Council, China's cabinet, have published a five-year cultural reform and development plan that calls for the completion of Internet laws and rules to "perfect". According to the plan, published by Xinhua, it includes a system to assess the eligibility of those working on news sites on the Internet.
